These are the essential items you will want to have on hand before your new Havanese puppy joins your family as well as a few optional extra supplies:
Essential Items
- High quality dog food (puppy will have been eating Fromm Heartland Gold Puppy. DogFoodAdvisor.com has great reviews & ratings on most dog foods available)
- High quality, nutritious treats for training (manufactured in Canada or USA only)
- Crate and/or exercise pen (pup should be able to stand up, lie down, turn around and stretch inside but not too large as dogs like a close-in-den-like space)
- Baby gate(s)
- Food and water bowls (ceramic or stainless steel is preferred as plastic can remove pigmentation from the nose and can hold bacteria)
- Collar (suggest adjustable nylon with 2 piece buckle)
- ID tag (engraved with dog’s name as well as your name and contact info – available at most pet stores)
- Harness (essential if using a tether strap in the car instead of a crate)
- Leash
- Poop bags
- Brushes & combs
- Nail clippers & styptic powder (to stop the bleeding should you inadvertently nick the quick of the nail). You may choose to have this done by your groomer instead.
- Toothbrush
- Dog Toothpaste
- Ear cleaning solution
- Cotton balls
- Puppy Shampoo & Conditioner
- Toys (chew toys to satisfy the need to gnaw, plush toys to provide comfort, fetch toys for
- interactive play, rope and tug toys which help floss teeth and critical thinking toys like treat dispensing devises that release treats when the pup performs a certain task)
Optional Items
- Dog bed (many consider this to be essential)
- Puppy Pee Pads
- Pheromone Products for anxiety (natural scents emitted by momma dogs that calm and relax anxious puppies – comes in collars, room diffusers and sprays)
- Dog clothes and outfits (a coat is recommended if you are keeping your dog in a puppy cut and booties can protect their pads from salt and sharp ice in winter)
